The much-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S4 has finally arrived in South Africa. Following the success of the S3, which sold over 50 million units around the world, the S4 is set to break new records.

Samsung have done an amazing job engineering this device, because as soon as you unpack it you realise it looks almost identical to the S3. The S4’s screen has pushed towards the edges, allowing for more screen viewing space.

The phone itself still feels plasticky, though. Having said that, the same criticism was levelled at the S3, and most of the S3 devices that I have seen have worn well over months of hard usage for most users.

It weighs 130g (3g lighter than the S3); it is 36.6 mm wide, 69.8 mm high and just 7.9 mm thick; it feels really light and comfortable when you hold it in your hands.

The SUPER AMOLED capacitive touchscreen is one of the best features of the device. It is brighter than the S3, and the colours are rich and warm, with the pixel density pushed up to 441 ppi. This is one of the first noticeable things you pick up if you previously had an S3. The screen of the S4 is considerably sharper, and images are rich with colour, and almost come alive.

The Samsung Galaxy S4’s hardware specs have been bumped up considerably. In terms of processors it comes into two variants: The Exynos Octa 5410, and the 1.9GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor that has LTE on the chip. The LTE version of the S4 will be available in the next five weeks according to Samsung.

It runs Jelly Bean, which is the latest version (4.2.2) of the Android’s Operating System.

One of the focal points of this device is the camera. The S4 has a 13MP camera that is very impressive, and shoots the most amazing pictures and video. But it can do a lot more than just take photographs.
One of the new features is Sound and Shot, allowing you to include audio in a photograph, making images come alive with sound.

Drama Shot captures a sequence of photographs and then puts them together in a sequence.

Dual Shot lets you simultaneously take a photograph using the front and rear cameras so that the photographer is never left out of the action.

All of these culminate together in the Story Album – almost like a digital scrapbook that captures and links everything about a particular event, and allows the user to customise the entire album.
A key differentiator of the SGS4 is the battery. The 2,600mAh battery is really powerful, and will last for a full day. Another great thing is that it is removable (for those who carry a spare battery).
The device has literally anything and everything available in terms of tech. Gone are the days where phones were used to make calls and check email and download apps, listen to music and take photographs.

This is where Samsung have based the focus of the GS4 by calling the device a “Life Companion”. It is what you can do with the phone that differentiates this device from the competitors.

The GS4 has nine built-in sensors that do incredible things to enhance the user experience and deliver something unique.

The gesture sensor recognises the movement of your hands, and lets you browse photographs by simply waving your hand across from left to right, as opposed to physically touching the screen.

It has a proximity sensor that uses infrared rays to work out if the user is near the phone.

A gyro sensor detects the phone’s rotation on three axes.

The accelerometer sensor works out the movement of the device, and is able to count your activity, like walking.

A gyromagnetic sensor is used to detect magnetic intensity and give a user an accurate compass reading.

There is a temperature and humidity sensor that checks on the comfort levels indoors and outdoors.

The barometer sensor measures the atmospheric pressure around you.

It also has a hall sensor that works our if you are indoors or outdoors.

The RGB light sensor measures intensity of the light source around you.

These may sound gimmicky, but put them to use around specific applications and that is what excites users.

S Health is another focus that will appeal to many who are health conscious, and based on how massive health and fitness has become, this will be a big draw card for users.

The S4 is able to track your workouts, how many steps you take daily, what you have eaten and basically make you conscious of leading a healthier life. Linked to S Health are 3rd party hardware editions that include an electric bathroom scale, a blood pressure and glucose monitor that will be able to send data to your phone, making you aware of all your vital body functions.

Have you ever felt lost in another country and have no idea what someone is saying to you or working out what a sign says? Not a problem for the SGS4. S Translator allows helps you translated text or audio across Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, Japanese into English, and vice versa.
The SGS4 comes with a world first Pan African warranty. If you purchase your device in Africa the device comes with a 24-month Accidental Damage from Handling (ADH) warranty that covers screen and liquid damages at no extra charge. Customers will be limited to two incidents per 24-month period, either two screen damages, two liquid, or one incident of each.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is a fantastic phone packed with features that will delight and wow people. Some may call many of them gimmicky, but the reality is that users will love these new additions.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 will cost you R8500 if you want to purchase it for cash, or it is available on various contract options on all four networks.

Consumers have tough choices to make if they are looking for a new Android smartphone. It almost feels like it is Android season with so many handsets being released at the moment. This month South African consumers will have the choice of the Sony Xperia Z, the Samsung Galaxy S4, the LG Optimus G and the HTC One.

The HTC One is one of the most beautifully designed smartphones I’ve ever seen. It really is strikingly beautiful. The first thing you notice is the all metal design. There is no plastic (apart from the electronics inside), just a solid aluminium body with a magnificent glass display tightly wrapped into one device. Thomas Chien who heads HTC’s design team, talks about how the HTC One is a collaboration from a team who worked together to “reinvent what a phone could be”.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGfULb1ZKBo

You certainly get the sense of a well-built quality finished product when you hold the HTC One in your hands. The brushed aluminium finish feels cold initially, but warms up quickly. You do become quite conscious of not letting the phone slip out of your hands; the handling is something you adapt to very quickly.

Measuring 137.4mm tall, 68.2mm wide and 9.3mm thick it is neither too small nor too big. Most top end smartphones today seem to have settled into this size range as a standard. It weighs 143 grams and feels well balanced in your hand.

The HTC One has a 4.7 inch screen on a Super LCD3 panel, making the display bright and crisp. It has a 2300 mAh battery that is integrated into the device, which means you can’t change batteries.

It has Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 600 quad core processor running at 1.7GHz with 2GB of RAM, and available with either a 32 or 64 GB storage option.

The HTC One uses the Jelly Bean version (4.1.2) of Android. Like other Android handset manufacturers, HTC has also customised this Android experience with the HTC Sense user interface to make it easier for users to navigate around the device.

One of the key features on this device is HTC’s BlinkFeed. Basically it is a live news feed of all the information that is important to you, delivered on the home screen of your device, almost like a digital newspaper, collecting the best of what you want to read. You are able to choose from 1400 news sources and also include your social networking feeds.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPFoQ-I0oME

HTC has gone an interesting route with their camera. Instead of megapixels they have decided on a bigger sensor and introduced an UltraPixel camera. This means that the camera is able to shoot well in dark conditions because it allows more lights into the sensor (300 percent more light than other smartphones according to HTC). That said though, the HTC performed very well in all lighting conditions and resolution lost in that “high megapixel” race is neither here or there. It still shoots video in full HD.

Another great feature on the HTC One is the sound. BeatsAudio is integrated into the device, giving users a fantastic listening experience. HTC has also introduced BoomSound, a new audio experience on the One. They have managed to put two front facing speakers, driven by a dedicated amplifier to enhance the user experience watching videos and listening to music. Almost like a mini boom box. The sound quality and volume was impressive, considering that it comes out for such tiny speaker.

The Good

The built quality is fantastic, probably the best around at the moment. The screen is rich and beautiful and HTC’s features like BlinkFeed enhance the user experience.

The Bad

The battery life is still an issue. If you really use the full functionality and features, the battery will drain quickly and you won’t get a day. But on average with email, calls and surfing the web, the HTC One will get through the day.

The HTC One is a magnificent device and certainly a contender for smartphone of the year. Consumers will have a tough time choosing between this and other devices, as all phones have unique features. At the end of the day, consumers win. Because the industry is so competitive and there is so much is at stake, cell phone manufacturers today can’t afford to bring out a bad phone.

There is no doubt that there is a massive shift happening in computing. As computing moves to the cloud the entire user experience and how we interact with technology is undergoing a fundamental shift driven by touch.

Microsoft’s latest operating system Windows 8 is very much evidence of this massive touch interface in computing that is taking place.

Anyone who has used Windows 8 on an Ultrabook without a touch screen will discover through sheer frustration that is not an ideal user experience.

This week I’ve been playing with Lenovo’s fabulous IdeaPad Yoga 13 Ultrabook. The clue is the name “Yoga” and what this fantastic Ultrabook can do.

The Yoga is Ultrabook with a touch screen and it can be used as a tablet thanks to an innovative design that allows this machine to flip over 360 degrees.

The first think I noticed when I unpacked the Yoga was the colour. My review unit was a burnt orange colour with that rubberised outer casing. Holding it is comfortable and it does not slip out of your hands.

The machine feels solid and well built.

The 13-inch Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga Ultrabook has an Intel Core i5-3317U processor running at 1.7 GHz. It has 4GB of RAM, a 256 GB solid state drive and all the connectivity features that you would expect to find on a high-end notebook.

The 13-inch multi touch capacitive multitouch has a resolution of 1600 x 900 and a 16:9 wide viewing angle.

It weighs 1.54 kg and has a battery life of over 8 hours.

The technical specs are pretty much standard for an Ultrabook in this class, and the Lenovo Yoga operated smoothly between applications with minimal cooling noise.

The differentiator with this Ultrabook is in the “Yoga”, just like the exercise regime, this machine screen is flexible.

The screen is able to flip over 360 degrees so that you can use the Yoga as a Windows 8 tablet. You can also pitch it like a tent at a 45 degree angle for games or to use it in presentations.

The screen is bright and very responsive thanks to Lenovo’s 10-finger multitouch touchscreen technology.

I was recently in Beijing visiting Lenovo and had the opportunity to interview the design team behind the Yoga’s design. The prototypes of this design go as far back as 2004. The critical part of the design is in the hinge.

The dual hinge design patented by Lenovo is made of Zinc Alloy and is extremely durable. It undergoes harsh testing at the Lenovo Labs in Beijing where they have a special machine that opens and closes the Yoga to test the durability. This specific hinge has passed the 25 000 rotation test. They literally open and close the device 25 000 times.

If you think of it, on average we do this 10 times a day while we work on our notebooks. That’s 2500 days or over 6.5 years of usage!

The Yoga is a great Ultrabook; the only negative is the keyboard. It is not the same quality as the ThinkPad range and I am not a fan of the rounded off edges.

I like the idea of having the tablet option but it can be a bit on the heavy side and tad bulky.

Overall the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 is a great Windows 8 Ultrabook with touch and is well priced at R14 000.
