No adjectives can adequately describe the day enjoyed by 300 children from 6 NCCF assisted charities namely, Matjele Community Centre, Waterwax Squatter Camp, Orlando Children’s Home, Thato Ke Matla, Villa of Hope and Thembelenkosini all from Soweto in celebration of Mandela Day at Orlando Children’s Home.
A blue light brigade pales into insignificance with the Harley escort that we received from Woodmead into Soweto. Pick ‘n Pay donated a giant birthday cake and goody bags. The Stuttafords team dressed the children in specially made T-shirts for the occasion and they also received Gap bags filled with treats. Makro Woodmead handed out groceries to the charities on their departure, a huge thank you to Bayley Worldwide Removals for delivering the groceries to Orlando Children’s home.
JK Productions outdid their promises to The Foundation, the jumping castles were the most colourful and inviting ever seen and the children wore themselves out rushing from one to another while some rested quietly having their faces painted and others lined up to receive sculpted balloons. The added donation of 2 ice cream machines were the ultimate treat with long lines of children waiting for their cone.
The children were also treated to some cricket fun in the form of 2 very tall former Proteas, Andre Nel and Garnett Kruger who arrived armed with sets of bats, balls and wickets (donated to each charity). By this time the children were all thirsty and hungry and the arrival of Nandos handing out a burger, chips, juice and a gift was received with great excitement. On hand to assist with the children was the delightful former Miss Jnr South Africa, Courtney Elson.
The children all gathered around the huge birthday cake and with a chorus of happy birthday to Madiba and blowing out of candles, the children then waited patiently to each enjoy a slice of the cake.
Thank you to a fantastic team of volunteers who helped make the day possible – your time and giving is most appreciated by The Nashua Children’s Charity Foundation.
