The Nashua Children’s Charity Foundation honoured Nelson Mandela with an initiative in Daveyton township on Sunday morning 17th July.
The 45 orphaned children of Badanisile were delighted when the volunteers from the foundation arrived. There was a huge amount of goodies for a birthday party, as well as items that were on Badansile’s wish list.
There were a host of celebrities such as former soccer stars Mark Williams, Marc Batchelor, Shaun Bartlett, Andre Arendse, former Miss SA, Peggy-Sue Khumalo, TV star – Hlubi Mboya and former Miss Teen and Selemetunzi presenter– Zizo Beda on hand to play games with all the children. They all participated in a 3 legged race, pin the tail on the donkey (better luck next time Marc), hoola-hoop and the spoon and potato race.
Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, Makro who discounted all the kitchenware that we purchased, Pick ‘n Pay Hypermarket, Woodmead donated the huge 93 birthday cake, Budget who donated a vehicle with petrol to transport goods and passengers. Many of our volunteers donated items for the home as well.
Once the candles were lit, everyone sang Happy Birthday to Madiba. The children enjoyed cupcakes and juice, with the actual cake being put aside to enjoy the following day on Mandela’s 93rd birthday. The children were treated to hotdogs and juice for lunch, and thereafter everyone joined in the fun with our celebrities and played soccer.
After a most eloquent thank you speech from 10 year old Katlego, we returned home.
On Monday 18th July some collection boxes were placed in the reception of Nashua Limited so that the staff could donate food and clothing towards one of our selected charities. These items were delivered on Tuesday to Abangani Nkosini in Alexander Township.
