It was a busy weekend for The Nashua Children’s Charity Foundation when volunteers hit the road for Limpopo Province to assist The Lonely Road Foundation in their quest to relieve the plight of 2 864 children in Ga-Dikgale, who depend on 16 drop-in Centre’s in the district for a daily meal. These facilities are meant to be stocked by the Limpopo government.
The NCCF spent almost a whopping R100 000.00 at Makro Woodmead, but left with groceries at a much higher value, thanks to a generous discount from Makro Woodmead and their fruit and vegetable partners.
The Lonely Road Foundation arranged for a huge truck to load the 16 pallets on Friday evening so that everyone could leave early on Saturday morning. At a designated meeting point in Polokwane, the team from Nashua Limpopo met up with the volunteers. The team came loaded with loaves of bread donated by their local Makro. They also bore bread rolls, homemade soup, sweets and chips- all donated by the staff at Nashua Limpopo.
At each centre the children were thrilled to see the volunteers and they were greeted by singing and dancing- and even a drum majorette troop! And so it continued at each centre into the night. The gratitude of the centre management and the children alike was overwhelming, but sadly this generous donation will only last them a maximum of 2 months before the food runs out again unless their local government comes to their assistance.
A huge thank you goes to the large volunteer contingent from Lonely Road Foundation, as well as the Nashua Limpopo team lead by Tania. Well done to Michelle and Thabiso for their superb organising skills. The Nashua Children’s Charity Foundation will be returning in August to assist in the planting of vegetable gardens at these Centres in order to provide a sustainable source of food.
P.S. A Warm Thanks to Bayley Worlwide and the Mini Council of Johannesburg.
Last week, an SMS from the Mini Council of Johannesburg gave the NCCF a belated warning that we would need a trailer to load all the blankets that they were donating to the NCCF charities. The NCCF arrived at the collection point, only to realize that they really meant it.
A call to Bayley Worldwide transport and we were rescued. They sent a driver from their depot, who loaded everything up for us and now have all the blankets safely in storage at their premises. They will count them up and then the NCCF will be able to assess how many children we can warm this winter. In addition, Bayley’s will assist with the deliveries.
Words are not enough to express our thanks to the wonderful Mini Council team who collected an unprecedented quantity of blankets for this chilly winter.
