There’s a great deal of enjoyment to be had in working from home, given how you’re in a familiar environment that’s filled with numerous sources of comfort you wouldn’t find in your office. Unfortunately, there’s a risk of getting too comfortable and taking too much of a relaxed approach to work. You might stay in bed for a while longer than usual, or end up being distracted by housework or the television. When you’re not in the bustling office environment and in the immediate vicinity of your boss and coworkers, it can be easy for you to lack the motivation to get on with your work. Here are some tips on staying motivated when you’re working from home.
Wake up early and get dressed
As we’ve said, you might find yourself getting up later than usual when working from home. But waking up early, as if you do have somewhere to be by, say, 9am, is a useful way of getting yourself into a productive work routine. Hop out of bed at a reasonable hour and give yourself ample time to prepare for a day at work. Part of your preparation process should be dressing properly, as clothes you usually wear on lazy days might instill a more relaxed state. Plus, making your bed and getting dressed can pull you further away from the idea of relaxing and put you in the mindset of working.
Create a workstation
The move from working in an office to working from home can be made easier by creating an office space in your home. It’s here that you can lay out all your work essentials in the way that you like them organised. It’s also an effective means of avoiding the distractions you might encounter if you were working in the living room or the kitchen, such as the television or household chores. Give yourself a space in which you can devote time purely to work.
Make a schedule
Breaking out of the traditional office space can also mean breaking out of traditional office hours. It might be difficult to recreate a solid work regime at home, but it’s an important step for keeping yourself going. Create a schedule that guides you through your day, from when you wake up to when you sign off. Read your emails at specific times, and assign yourself tasks in order of their importance. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be able to move efficiently from one task to the other.
Get some exercise
Working from home gives you more opportunity to do things you wouldn’t be able to do if working in the office. One particular example is exercise. While you’re at home, allow yourself some time to work out for at least half an hour. Be it yoga, aerobics or some weight lifting, a small amount of daily exercise will give you the boost you need to get through the day. In fact, studies have shown that exercise, even in the form of walking, may help with stress and can reduce the risk of burnout.
Give yourself rewards
It’s always great to reward yourself after hard work or a job well done. Motivate yourself with little luxuries throughout the day. Do two hours of work, then take a coffee break or have your favourite snack. Being at home means being allowed to enjoy your home, albeit with some discipline when you’re working, so why not treat yourself to some moments of pleasure. Take a stroll in the garden or cook something simple yet delicious. Indulge in what your home has to offer.
There are many ways to keep yourself going throughout the day while working from home. All it takes is discipline, proper scheduling, and allowing yourself some time to break away from work to recharge yourself.
