Van Kervel School in the Western Cape caters for learners with special educational needs. The school places emphasis on programs to give learners skills in panel-beating, spray-painting, woodwork, welding, automotive repairing, maintenance, hospitality studies, early childhood development, office practice and hairdressing. Van Kervel School, spearheaded by Trevor Ellis, aims to build pride and a sense of accomplishment in students who would otherwise be considered drop-outs or would battle to cope in mainstream schools.
Many learners arrive at Van Kervel School feeling hopeless and with a low self-esteem. For most of their life, they’ve been told that they were unable to keep up with the curriculum. The school instils a sense of accomplishment in its learners and they can, maybe for the first time, experience the sweet taste of success. Each and every learner receives individual attention and is provided with opportunities. The school also focuses on physical education and sport and their athletes, rugby, netball, cricket and soccer players can participate on a national level. In the past, tug-of-war teams have even participated in the World Junior Tug-of-War Championships in Switzerland and the African Championships in Zambia.
