It was a momentous Mandela Day for the Nashua Children’s Charity Foundation (NCCF), which collected and distributed tons of donated goods to the charities it supports – in honour of the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. Backed by some of South Africa’s most powerful brands, the NCCF’s 9th annual Mandela Day event provided much-needed support for 6 600 children.
A day of giving
The foundation hosted 72 children and 24 caregivers from 12 charities at Nashua’s Woodmead offices. The event was also attended by Miss SA 2017 Adé van Heerden, artist Helen Desbois, retired South African footballer Mark Fish and members of the Blue Bulls team, including Jamba Ulengo, Andell Loubser, Marco van Staden, Conraad Van Vuuren and Edgar Marutlulle.
The children, between six and 10 years old, received Toughees school shoes, the book The Children’s Madiba – The Life Story of Nelson Mandela, socks, lunch packs and goody bags during the 67-minute-long event. On the day, the NCCF also packed the hundreds of other items it collected, and distributed them to 29 charities.
The NCCF’s Mandela Day event is devoted to bringing joy and hope into the lives of children through the donation of food, gifts and other necessities to charities.
For this year’s charity collection, the foundation received fruit and vegetables, non-perishable groceries, stationery, linen, clothing, toys, houseware and plasticware. These were donated from sponsors as well as staff and members of the public, who donated these items in boxes placed in the reception area of Nashua’s Woodmead offices.
The organisation received substantial donations from Aaron’s Rock Your Socks, BATA, Bidvest Waltons, Builders Warehouse, Dis-Chem Woodmead, JHB Mini-Council, Mondi, PanSolutions, Peotona, Pick n Pay Woodmead, Plasticland Woodmead, Reunert, Sole2Sole, Warm the World, Waverley synagogue and a number of Nashua branches.
Various of Nashua branches around the country also distributed stationery packs, donated by Regus and Spaces.
NCCF sponsors open their hearts
“We received extremely generous donations for this year’s charity collection,” says NCCF Operations Director Helen Fraser. “Making a difference is so important, but you cannot do it on just one day of the year. The NCCF makes a difference every single day.”
The NCCF supports more than 15 000 underprivileged children on a daily basis. It provides food, cleaning materials, toiletries, stationery, school clothes and bags to a permanent network of 75 children’s charities to help create sustainable, child-friendly living conditions. It also spearheads building projects and facilitates upgrades to existing community centres.
The foundation’s Mandela Day event is just one of many initiatives that give back to the community, driven by Nashua as part of its brand promise: ‘Real People. Real Solutions’.
