“I will never forget the 7th of February 2015 for the rest of my life” said 14 year old Portia from the Thusong Children’s Home as we sat in the wave pool trying to cool off from the heat of the day.
At 07:00 on Saturday morning, Mugg and Bean in Sandton treated the children to giant muffins and juices. The children then got to select and try on bathing costumes, and each received a goody bag filled with snacks and refreshments courtesy of Nashua North East, before we set off to the Sun City Valley of the Waves. On arrival, the Valley of the Waves team had set up camp for us, supplying towels, umbrellas and life-jackets. As soon as bathing costumes were pulled on and sun screen applied, it was a dash to the water with shrieks of delight – none of these children had ever been to Sun City before. They braved the waves, enjoyed the slide and tube rides and splashed in the lazy river.
Steer lunch got them briefly out of the water, and after some more fun, it was time to change and board the bus to return home. After a quick snack of water and apples, the fun and excitement of the day caught up with the little ones and they napped on the way back to Johannesburg.
This was undoubtedly a day they will remember for years to come. Thank you to all our supporters and volunteers who helped to make this day possible.
