Smiles and hugs as the NCCF visits charities

| 17 July 2018

The Nashua Children’s Charity Foundation (NCCF) was greeted by hundreds of smiling children during its visits to a number of homes and orphanages it assists. The organisation checked in with 11 charities in the East Rand of Johannesburg in May and another 11 in Alexandra in June.

Hope thrives in East Rand homes and orphanages

Sadly, the first stops at Badanisile Place of Safety, Simamisa Orphanage and Tsidi’s Children’s Home saw devastation on different levels. But thanks to the unwavering dedication of house mothers, staff and volunteers, these charities continue to bring hope to South African children in need.

Great strides are being made by the other eight organisations the NCCF visited on the day. Fountain of Love Orphanage Centre, for instance, provides children with the entrepreneurial skills to handcraft handbags, shoes and necklaces, among other items.

The team was truly humbled when it revisited the orphanages it supports, including Maphindi’s Day Care Centre and Pre-Class, Caritas Home, Epworth Children’s Village and Lambano Sanctuary.

Phutanang Safe Home and Soup Kitchen, Pelonomi Pre-Cum Crèche, and Caroline’s Care Safe House and Crèche were also visited.

Hugs in Alexandra

The trip to NCCF-assisted organisations in Alexandra and suburbs further afield, was another enjoyable experience for everyone involved. It also highlighted a variety of needs and opportunities.

The children of St Mary’s Children’s Home asked the NCCF team to be treated to a sponsored outing, which the foundation will look to arrange. It will also purchase much-needed educational equipment for the 80 children at Lorentzville Day Care Centre. In addition, food and beverages will be provided to the 162 matriculants who are attending a three-week holiday programme at Alexandra High School.

The NCCF found that Nomonde’s Children’s Home continues to struggle with very little support from any organisations other than the foundation. The team was, however, happy to see that Hearts of Hope, Strathyre Girl’s Home, Juno Aurora Haven, Thuthuzela Aid Community Centre and Impilo Child Protection & Adoption Services are all well run by caring, efficient staff.

The foundation was greeted by more than 100 children at the Abangani Enkosini organisation, where it handed out sweet treats and socks. The NCCF thanks the Aaron’s Rock your Socks initiative for participating in the visits and providing socks to the children at each of the homes in Alexandra.

The team also thanks Uber for sponsoring its travels from charity to charity.
